you have a sub-minimum.".

2§ = One of several types of strong hands.
2¨ = Relay. A positive suit
response requires KQxxx, AJTxx or better in the suit, and 8+ hcp. We
would only respond 2NT when we held a balanced hand with kings or better in all
suits.
2© = 5+ ©-suit,
some 4+ suit, and 20+ hcp or 8+ playing tricks. One round force.
2ª = Second relay.
3ª = 5+ ©-suit,
4+ §-suit, and either 23+ hcp or
9½ or more playing tricks. Forcing game.
4§ = Slamtry in clubs.
4¨ = 1st or 2nd round control of diamonds.
4ª = 1st or 2nd round control of spades, denies
©-control.
4NT = RKCB for clubs.
5¨ = 0 or 3 out of 5 aces (1403-variation).
5© = Asking for queen of clubs.
5ª = §Q
plus ªK, or, §Q plus ©K
plus ¨K. South knows from his own hand, that
North holds ªK.
6© = Ultimate attempt for grand slam, promising
excellent hearts.
7§ = North has too many extras to turn South
down.

West does best to lead a heart for the stiff ace. Dummy returns a diamond for king.
West brings back ¨T to nail the nine. Dummy
wins, and plays a spade to the king. Declarer exits in hearts. West wins the nine and
knock out ¨J. Declarer comes to hand with ªA, and lays down ©K.
When the queen drops, two more hearts and §A
ensure his game. This line gives South at least a 26% chance to survive. The other line,
finessing §K and playing for a 3-3 break in
spades, is good for only 18%.
