2ª = Muiderberg
weak-2: 5-card ª-suit, 4 or more of a minor,
5-10 hcp.
2NT = Balanced, ª-stopper, 16-18 hcp. South is
short one hcp, but a takeout double on this very flat hand is not very much of an
alternative.
3NT = Natural! Berry Westra recommends the Niemeyer
set of responses, including Puppet Stayman and transfers all the
way trhough 4©. The exception are the 3NT and
4NT responses. In Niemeyer, they would show exactly 5ª and 4©,
but this can hardly be regarded as useful, when East has already shown 5 spades.
More analysis to follow.

2© = Muiderberg
weak-2: 5-card ©-suit, 4 or more cards in a
minor, 5-10 hcp.
3¨ = 5+ suit, 12-15 hcp.
4© = South's hand appears to fit extremely well
with North's, making the singleton of diamonds a very nice asset.
West looks at too many losers to bid 5¨. His
judgment turns out to be right, since 5¨ goes
for 500, an amount of points NS cannot earn on their own.
