3§ = 4+ ª-support,
balanced hand, 7-9 hcp.
Dbl = Too strong to just bid 4ª.
5¨ = 1st or 2nd round control of ¨.
Dbl = Lightner
double, asking for an unusual lead. Most of the
time, East must look for the void in West's hand.
This slam may go for 1100: ¨ ruffed, ten
of spades to the jack, ¨ ruffed, §A, and another ¨
ruffed.

1§ = 16+ hcp, many sorts of hands.
1¨ = Less than 8 hcp, or 8+ hcp, but no 5-card
suit to bid.
5© = 5+ spades and 5+ of a minor.
5NT = Asking for the minor.
6¨ goes off one on a club lead, since South is
declarer. The slam is cold, when North is declarer, he will ruff two hearts in hand, draw
the last trump, dump a §-loser of dummy on the
fifth spade, and has then only two trumps left in dummy.
East may bid 6© over 6¨, knowing that his side has 11 hearts. West turns out to have a
very easy play for 12 tricks, and even 13 on everything but a ª-lead.
When South decides to bid 6ª over 6©, West has to lead the ten
of clubs to beat him by 4 tricks. If West leads §Q,
South will not cover. East will win next trick with §A,
and return a ¨ for the second undertrick.

1ª = Needs no alert, for over a takeout
double, Walsh approach is off, technically spoken. At the other
hand, virtually every bridge player would convert to Walsh to
some extent, especially, when responder has 4 or 5 diamonds and
4 hearts.
Dbl = East downgrades a little for his
3343-pattern, so the 1NT-overcall is out of the question.

1§ = 16+ hcp, one of several types of hands,
one round force. North upgrades for
his straight flush in spades, of course.

3§ = 1st or 2nd round control of clubs, denying
control of spades.
3ª = 1st or 2nd round control of spades,
denying control of diamonds.
4¨ = 1st or 2nd round control of diamonds.
4ª = 1st round control of spades, since the cue

5© = 2 or 5 aces without
queen of trumps.
