Pass = Downgrading for 3433-pattern.
2¨ = West has a dead minimum for this fourth
suit forcing. Rebids of 1NT and 2©
would be much more out of line.
3NT = Hoping that West can handle diamonds, but East has little alternatives, for:
- 2©, 2ª,
2NT, 3§ and 3¨
would be gross underbids.
- 3© would force game, but promise 3-card suit.
- 3ª would force game, but promise 5+ spades
and longer clubs.
- 4§ would be a relatively white lie, but
bypass 3NT.
- 4¨ would show 4-card suit in a
4045-hand.
The double ¨-hook gives East about 92% of
making 3 tricks, and about 53% to make 4 tricks in that suit, so 3NT is by far the
best game to play in.

Dbl = Too strong to overcall 1ª. The excellent 6-card suit and the ace-king of
diamonds more than make up for the stiff jack, South has to downgrade for.
2© = Sort of Moysian
style, showing preparedness to play in a 4-3 fit, but 2§
would be too discouraging, and the reverse of 2¨
would be an overbid.
2ª = 5+ suit, 16-17 hcp. South would double
for takeout again with more strength.
4© = Expecting to have a play for this, even
when East has only 3-card support, for in that case, he will probably have compensation
elsewhere.
4ª = Expecting West to have a play for 4©, and South to have a play for 4ª.

South invites, for there are only a few minimum hands, North can quickly cash out in
3NT with. On this particular hand, anything but underleading §A will beat the contract.

1© = Could have 4-card suit, since a negative
double requires precisely 4 hearts and 4 spades,
or else, 12+ hcp.
2¨ = Smart attempt to make North declarer in
NT, crucial when he holds ¨Qx(x).
2NT = ¨-stopper and less than 14 hcp.
