2§ = Stayman relay,
for which a 4-card major is not required.
2© = 4- or 5-card ©-suit, or 4-4 in the majors.
2ª = 4-card ª-suit,
no 4-card ©-suit, 8+ hcp.
4ª = 4-card ª-suit
and 16-17 hcp.
In order to make ten tricks, South must limit his ¨-losers
to one, and ruff two hearts in hand. If West leads any suit but spades, South will
accomplish his mission just in time, for example: §
to jack and queen, ª to the eight, © to the ten, ª
to the queen, ©A, © ruffed, §A, © ruffed, ¨A
(dropping the ten), ¨ to eight and king
(applying principle of restricted choice),
and East can do no more harm.
This plan fails when West starts out with a trump to the jack: ©9 to the ten, ªT for
the queen, ©A, © ruffed, §A, © ruffed, ¨A,
¨ ducked to the king, § to the king, and a ¨-return,
ruffed by East.

1¨ = Virtually denying 4-card majors in Walsh
approach. Requires alert.
1NT = No need to bid hearts, since East is most unlikely to hold a 4-card ©-suit. Requires alert.

2§ = One round force.
3¨ = Forcing game,
for with a weaker hand, East would have bid 2¨
over 1ª. 3NT is the alternative, but if West
comes up with the right minimum, like 2 aces plus 3 diamonds to the jack, 6¨ could be on.
3ª = West can't raise to 4¨, nor bid 3NT.
