Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- pass 1NT pass
2§ pass 2ª pass
4ª pass pass pass.

2§ = Stayman relay. West does not have to hold a 4-card major, but he could have both majors and a virtual yarbourough, as well.

Recommended bidding sequence:

1© 1ª 1NT dbl
2© pass pass 2ª
pass pass pass.

Dbl = We favor showing precisely 3-card ª-support, since a penalty double can hardly be profitable in such auctions.
2ª = Little reason to jump to 3ª, for North has not nearly shown a maximum for his overcall.

4¨ pass 4ª pass

6© pass pass pass.

2§ = 3+ §-suit, 12+ hcp.
3© = Showing at least some slam interest in hearts.
3ª = First or second round of spades, must be ace or king from his previous bidding.
4§ = First or second round control of clubs.
4¨ = First or second round control of diamonds.
4ª = First or second round of spades.
4NT = RKCB.
5§ = 1 or 4 out of 5 aces (1403-variation).
5¨ = Asking for queen of trumps. If East does not have this important card, he will respond 5©, which West will be glad to pass out.
6§ = ©Q and §K, or, ©Q, ªK, and ¨K, a smart variation originated by Jan Jansma and Rob van Wel.

The slam is close, but trumps behave, and the crucial §-finesse over North works. Trade ¨QJ for §Q, and the slam is cold.

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
pass 2¨ pass 2©
pass 3ª pass 4¨
pass 4ª pass pass
pass.

2¨ = Multi-colored: weak-2 in a major, or one of several types of strong hands.
2© = Signoff opposite weak-2 in a major.
3ª = Single-suited semiforcing in spades (6+ suit). South may pass now with a virtual yarbourough.
4¨ = 5+ suit, forcing game, or advanced cuebid on the road to ª-slam. South's other option is 3NT, but there could still be slam indeed, when North showed up with good ¨-support. Exchange North's red suits, and we see that this assumption is not a mere illusion.
4ª = Showing solid spades, and denying 3- or 4-card ¨-support.

Our NS pair dropped 11 imps on this board because of an optimistic interpretation of the auction up to 4¨:

West North East South
pass 2¨ pass 2©
pass 3ª pass 4¨
pass 4© pass 4ª
pass 4NT pass 5§
pass 6ª pass pass
pass.

4© = Advanced control showing in hearts, advanced, because NS have not found a trump suit yet. North would have to bid 4NT or 5¨ to show the ¨-fit.
4ª =  Correctly meant as a signoff in spades, but interpreted by North as a slam try in spades, since South could have signed off in spades or NT at his previous turn of bidding. To North, it would not make sense to investigate 5¨, where 3NT and 4NT would be easier to bid and make. North, of course, should have obeyed his partner, who had a far better picture of the slam potential of the NS hands, but he tried:
4NT = RKCB for spades.
5§ = 1 or 4 out of 5 aces (1403-variation).

East had no trouble finding the §-lead. North won, played 5 rounds of trumps, and took the inevitable §-finesse...
