Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- pass pass pass
2NT pass 3§ pass
3¨ pass 3NT pass
pass pass.

2NT = West cheats one hcp in fourth chair to simplify the auction.
3§ = Puppet Stayman, asking for 4- and 5-card majors at the same time.
3¨ = 1 or 2 4-card majors.
3NT = To play.

North leads his 5th heart to the ten. On the first round of diamonds, South follows with the king. After 4 rounds of diamonds, West must find access to dummy in order to cash his 5th diamond. If West leads a low heart, and North follows low, he will have to guess which honor South holds. If South has no ©-honor, both the ten and king from dummy will succeed, and if South has both of them, both lines will fail. If South holds the ace, the nine in dummy will win the contract, but if South has the queen, dummy must rise with the king. Many Wests will try a low spade to the queen, but if North rises with the king, and returns a heart, West has the same guess to make.

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- --- pass 1§
1ª dbl rdb pass
2ª 3NT pass pass
pass.

Dbl = Negative, showing 4-card ©-suit and 6+ hcp, or just 12+ hcp, or both.
Rdb = Showing precisely 3-card ª-support.
2ª = Minimum 1ª-overcall.

North immediately takes at least 9 tricks after a ª-lead, but a §-lead will not help defense either. After a § for the nine, and a club for the jack, West cannot continue the suit. Smart Wests will continue ©K in order to create a ©-entry in East. This Coup Deschappelles will not succeed, for North simply ducks. Any continuation in a major will set up a 9th trick for North, and if West parts in diamonds, North sets up his 9th trick by leading a spade from dummy.

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- --- --- pass
pass 1© pass 1ª
pass 2¨ pass 2©
pass pass pass.

1ª = Attempt to find a fit in ª, in which case South's hand will contribute much more to the part score, that South is after.

If EW defend accurately, the 4-1 break in hearts turns out a too high barrier to overcome, for example: §Q, § for the ace, ©A, ¨T for the ace, spade to the ace, §K ruffed and overruffed, ©-return, ¨K, ¨ ruffed, and with ¨Q not coming down, North still loses a ¨ and a spade for down one.

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
pass pass pass 1NT
pass 2© pass 2ª
pass 4§ pass 4©
pass 4ª pass pass
pass.

2© = Jacóby transfer, i.e. 5+ spades and 0+ hcp.
4§ = Splinter, promising 6+ spades, singleton or void in clubs, and enough hcp strength to justify a slamtry at a comfortable slamtry below the level of game.
4© = denying a ¨-control, and telling North, that 6ª is at best a 50% bet.

A ¨-lead will hold South to 11 tricks. Only matchpoint players of the lower echelons may bitch about the lousy imp, that may have been lost by the slamtry, for many Easts will lead their diamonds, regardless of the bidding sequence, simply because it's their only 4-card suit.
