Dbl = For takeout, can be made on a
variety of hands, for South may be trapping with a stack a spades and some worthful
outside values.
2§ = South's spades and hcp strength are far
below the minimum to allow the double to stand for penalties. With less than 8 hcp, South
must pick a suit as cheap as he can. A 1NT-response requires 6-9 hcp and a ª-stopper.
Dbl = For takeout, can be made on a variety
of hands, for West may be trapping with a stack a spades and some worthful outside values.
2© = West is about a §Q short of trapping.
North lead three rounds of trumps. West wins the third one in dummy, cashes three high
hearts, ruffs out ªJ, and exits with ¨Q. North cashes §A,
and nails West in hand with §K for down one.

North leads ªA and a low spade for the
queen. West tries a diamond to queen and ace, but North immediately returns a club for
queen and king. ©A guarantees the setting
trick, and it cannot run away.

1NT = Upgrading for his excellent 5-card ª-suit.
2© = 5+ hearts, 5+ of a minor (vulnerable!) in
Multi Landy and Cappelletti.
Dbl = Negative, 4-card ª-suit and 7+ hcp.
4ª = Upgrading for his aces, §-singleton and 5-card ¨-suit.
North takes a look at dummy with §A, and shifts
to ©Q for the king. North draws three rounds of
trumps, and then leads a ¨ to the ace and a ¨ for the king. South returns a heart for ten, jack
and ace. West unblocks ¨Q, ruffs a club in
dummy, and dumps his ©-loser on ¨9.
If East becomes declarer, a ©-lead to the ace
will cause more trouble. East must immediatetly return a low ¨ towards the queen, draw trumps, duck a ¨ to South, win the ©-return
in dummy, cross to hand with ¨A, and dump his ©-loser on ¨9.
If East draws trumps before making the key play in diamonds, he will never get back to
hand in time for the ©-discard.
The normal ¨-play, leading queen and ten
successively, will fail. This is not the practical way either, for with only three clubs
between EW, North is far more likely to hold 5+ clubs than 5+ diamonds for his second
suit.

2ª = Muiderberg weak-2: 5-card ª-suit, 4+ of a minor (5+ if vulnerable), and 5-10
hcp.
2NT = Forcing relay.
3¨ = 4+ suit, minimum hand.
It takes accurate defense to hold West to 9 tricks: ©K
overtaken by ace, ¨A, © to ten, and a ¨-return.
West may ruff 2 spades, and dump one on the king of clubs, but will yield one spade to
South's king in the end.
