1NT = 5+ in both minors. When LHO has opened, and RHO responded at the one-level, there
is no need to jump to 2NT (Unusual 2NT or Two Lower
Unbid). East needs to alert this very logical treatment, since some people
still prefer the natural 1NT-overcall in this situation, though it may never come up.

East must pass at his first turn to call, for a negative double
would show both majors. West must
reopen with a double, in case East is 'trapping' with a large number of diamonds and
adequate hcp count. At his third turn to call, West finally gets the chance to show his
balanced 18-count.

3ª = Preemptive re-raise. West has lots of other calls to explore game below the level
of 3ª. Our system uses 2-way game tries.
After 1ª-2ª:
...2NT = Help suit relay. Responder must bid 3§, after which opener will bid the suit, he
has 2½-3 losers in. His second rebid of 3ª would show 2½-3 losers in clubs.
...3§, 3¨, and 3© = Short suit trials in clubs, diamonds, and hearts, respectively.
South's pass over 2ª virtually denies more than 5 hcp. A second takeout double over 3ª
without a 4-card ©-suit is unwise, so North passes quickly over 3ª, hoping to set it.
and gain a plus score after all.
