North's double = negative, promising 4-card ª-suit, since he
already denied 12 or more hcp.
3¨ = Competing for part score, and making life hard on NS. With a queen more, East would
use the support double to invite to game. This type of support
double is better known as competitive double, since it shows 3+ support and extra values,
rather than exactly 3-card support without lower limit of strength.
3ª = Also competing for part score. If South has 4 spades and
strength to spare, it will be his turn to take a competitive
double.
More analysis to follow.

2¨ = Multi-colored, based on weak-2 in spades.
3© = More than likely, South holds weak-2 in spades. It is unwise to preempt over
(presumed) preepmts, so this jump overcall shows a good intermediate, i.e. 6+ suit and
15-17 hcp.

3NT = 5-card ª-suit, 9+ hcp. 2NT would show the same shape, but only 8, or a bad 9
hcp.

1© = If EW adhere to Walsh approach, East must alert, for
West may bypass a 4+ suit in diamonds.
