Dbl = Not having the ideal pattern, but
passing now would give up on the battle for partscore, which is bad tactics at
matchpoints.
Pass = Lacking the ª-stopper to justify a
1NT-response.
2ª = 4+ suit, 8-9 hcp, constructive, as a 1ª-response would not promise more
than a yarbourough.

4ª (jumpcue) = mild slam invitation, no game invitation, for North cannot
revert to 4¨. If North comes up with any reasonable ¨-suit headed by the ace, second
round control of spades, and ace of hearts, 6¨ is a virtual laydown. Therefore, a jump to
5¨, which could easily be preemptive form North's point of view, is rather chicken.
Dbl = For ª-lead and penalties.
5§ = Shows 1st or 2nd round control of clubs, but denies control of ª. We would have
passed with 2nd round control of spades, and redoubled with 1st round control of spades.
North hopes that South can take care of spades.
5¨ = Signoff, since NS will surely start off taking 2 rounds of spades.
