Recommended Matchpoints Bidding Sequence:

West North East South
--- --- pass pass
1§ 1© 1ª pass
2ª pass pass pass.

1ª = 5+ suit, 6+ hcp. Remember, we use the negative double to show exactly 4 spades.
2ª = West has an extra trump and a singleton, but downgrades his ©-holdings a little.

Recommended Bidding Sequence:

West North East South
--- --- --- 1©
pass 1ª pass 2NT
pass 3© pass 4¨
pass 4© pass pass
pass.

1© = Ready to jump in Notrump next. South's hand is too strong to open 1© with.
1ª = Hopes to find a 4-4 fit in spades.
2NT = Balanced hand, 18-19 hcp, forcing game, as recommended by former world champions Leufkens and Westra. The excellent ©-suit makes up for the one hcp missing. South could still have 4522, in which case he is too strong to rebid 3ª or 4ª over North's 1ª-response.
3© = 3+ ©-support and forcing.
4¨ = 1st or 2nd round control of ¨-denies §-control. South can't bid 3ª to show his control in that suit, for it would show the 4522-hand discussed above.
4© = North has 2 reasons to check out: he holds 4333, and South has §Qx at best.

Recommended Bidding Sequence:

West North East South
pass pass 1§ pass
1© 2¨ dbl 4¨
4ª pass pass pass.

Pass = Probably the best action with only 7 hcp working, and a 4-card major. If South overcalls 1¨, he may become declarer in 4 or 5¨, and get the unwanted ©-lead.
Dbl = Negative, showing 4-card ª-suit. NS have not found their fit yet, so this is not a support or competitive double. 2ª would stille be reverse, and East does not have the strength to take such action.
4¨ = Preemptive. South will jumpcue 3©, if he wants to invite to game or even slam in ¨.
4ª = With the double fit in the blacks, and the singleton in ¨, West has a fair chance of making his game, and if not, NS are very likely to score +130. West is not afraid to push NS into a game they are too chicken to bid by themselves, for if North has the strength, he needs no encouragement. If South has underbid with 4¨, and corrects next (hopefully not after a hesitation by North), so be it.
Pass = North must take into account, that:
- his side is unlikely to make game;
- down 3 for -500 yields a bad score where EW can't score better than 420 or 450;
- down 2 for -300 yields a bad score where EW can't score better than 140.
