1 = Most experts encourage to open 1NT with a 5-card major, if the hand is balanced and
contains 15-17 hcp. An opening bid of 1ª may cause difficulty with East's rebid.
2 = Stayman relay. West does not have to have a 4-card major,
unless he is very weak, in which case he holds 4/4 of 5/4 in the majors. In Europe, this
very commonly used Stayman variation needs an alert from East.
3 = East denies a 4-card ©-suit, which he would have shown first, but may still have a
5-card ª-suit (like here).
4 = Inviting to game.
5 = Maximum hand with 5-card ª-suit. If East has a minimum,
he should not show his 5-card ª-suit, but pass.
6 = West, not East, decides what sort of contract is going to be played.
