1 = Many Easts can't overcall 2¨, because they have a conventional usage for that
call. They should be glad, for this East hand is not worth a vulnerable 2¨ overcall
anyway.
2 = With 4-card ©-support, prospects of ruffing ¨ of dummy, 16 hcp, and 3 aces, North is
too strong to confine with 2©.
3 = In a team game, South could bet on the hand North actually has. South should not reach
for game at matchpoints in a moderate field. Remember, taking 11 tricks in partscore on
this boad is good for 59.5% of the matchpoints already.

1 = Jacoby transfer, promising at least 5 hearts, and 0 or
more hcp.
2 = East is a heart short for the type of action North took at the previous board.
3 = Asking East to convert to 4© with 3 or more hearts.
4 = With 3-card ©-support, East should correct to 4©, unless he has a 4333 pattern and
many queens and jacks. Don't listen to those who often find an excuse to stay in 3NT. They
lost the road to Dodge City, Oklahoma, or Tombstone, Arizona, some 120 years ago.

1 = Muiderberg weak-2: 5-card major, 4+ of a
minor, and 5-10 hcp.
2 = East has too much strength to overcall 2NT, besides the fact he owns a 4-card ª-suit.
3 = Preemptive raise to give EW an even harder time finding the right contract. North is
ordered to pass, no matter where he stands within his range of strength.
4 = With a spade or a king more, he could backfire East's double by doubling at his
turn. We would call that a responsive double.
5 = Like we said, North is supposed to shut up.
6 = From experience we know, West holds about 8 hcp when the auction comes to East like
3©-pass-pass or 2©-pass-3©.
7 = It would be bad matchpoints tactics to bid some number of diamonds now. West must rely
on East to not have bid lightly.

1 = North has not the shape to justify a takeout double.
2 = Most good players treat an immediate jump to 4 of partner's major as semi-preempt: 5+
support, 7-9 hcp, some singleton or void. Without North's overcall, East should try
something else, for because of the ace of clubs, slam could be missed easily.
3 = A sacrifice bid of 5¨ is sort of risky, because EW can't gain 500 points on their
own.
