1 = Too nice to open 3© or 4© with.
2 = Too nice to overcall 3ª or 4ª with.
3 = Negative double, promising length in the unbid suit, 12 or
more hcp, or both. South may also have 3-card ©-support
and invitational strength or better.
4 = A 1NT-response to an overcall requires a queen or so more, and why should East wait
for the opportunity to double for penalties when NS end up in 4©?
5 = Showing a hand too good for an initial preempt, i.e. 7+ ©-suit and 11-14 hcp.
6 = West did not redouble to show 3-card support, and did not
promise anything else, so East must be very careful.
7 = West gratefully grasps his chance.
8 = East must respect West's penalty double.
More discussion to follow.

1 = Saving 2NT for the better 4+ card
raise, the double to show exactly 3-card
support, as we have all discussed before.
2 = South does what he has to do, regardless of the noise EW make.
North has 3 wasted hcp in hearts, and still 4ª
only needs the king of trumps to be on side.

1 = We don't play inverted minor raises in competition, for
that would work against us in the long run.
2 = Support double, showing exactly 3-card ©-support, and unlimited hcp count.
3 = 2ª would be reverse, showing 16+
hcp.
4 = Should stand a fair chance, even when South brings as little as 6 hcp.
More discussion to follow.

1 = South is too weak for a negative free bid of 2ª, and unsuited for a negative double.
2 = The appropriate action, for South may be trapping.
3 = For converting to a penalty double, South is short some high
card strength in- and outside of the §-suit.
4 = South is likely to have a 5-card ª-suit,
for he would have made a negative double with 4 spades, unless
he held a very weak hand.
More discussion to follow.

1 = Muiderberg weak-2: 5©, 4+
minor, 5-10 hcp.
2 = Clubs are too bad to overcall at the 3-level with, and South lacks at least 1 hcp as
well.
3 = Nor reason to scramble with 3§. With 2
trumps and 10 nice hcp in dummy, 2© should play
just fine.
More discussion to follow.

|
1 = In Walsh approach, South will often bypass a 4-, 5- or
6-card suit in ¨, so North must stay alert to
alert.
2 = Balanced hand, 18-19 hcp.
3 = New Minor Forcing, hoping to find North with a 4-card ª-suit.
4 = 3-card ©-suit, and may still have a 4-card ª-suit.
5 = Continuing the search for the 4-4 fit in ª.
6 = Denies the 4-4 fit in ª.
All of the sudden, it appears as if Jansma and Verhees
are playing some sort of Power Precision.
More discussion to follow.

1 = At the level of 2, not even worth a non-vulnerable overcall.
2 = Bergen raise: 4+ ª-support, and
0-6 hcp.
3 = Making the reasonable assumption, that East is in the top of his hcp range.
This is why former Dutch champion Ton Lucassen doesn't like preemptive double raises, but
even if East raises to 2ª, it's virtually
impossible to stay out of game, unless West suffers from depressions.
