1NT = One of several types of hands, 5-11 hcp, one round force. East denies
3-card ª-support, unless he has 10-11 hcp at
the same time. This is exactly what he has.
2ª = Ordinary reverse with 16-19 hcp.
3© = 3-card ©-support
and 10-11 hcp. With less strength, West would have raised immediately, and with only
2-card ©-support, West should rebid 2NT (5-7
hcp) or 3NT (8-9 hcp).
4© = East downgrades for his stiff king of
clubs. That leaves have with insufficient strength to iniatiate a ciebidding sequence,
especially at matchpoints in a field that is unlikely to rush into sharp slams.

2NT = Balanced hand, 20-21 hcp. SomeWest will downgrade for the 3343-pattern and open 1¨, and end up in an even more rotten contract.
Pass = West may very well make game if he has 4 or 5 hearts, or 5 spades, but if not, he
will find himself in a rotten 3NT-contract. Therefore, East should stay fixed at
matchpoints.

2¨ = 4+ ¨-support,
no 4-card major, 10+ hcp, inverted minor raise.
3§ = Showing §-stopper,
denying stoppers in the majors.
3¨ = Giving up on 3NT, since EW don't have a ©-stopper.
3ª = Excellent call that shows a half
stopper in spades, and hopes to find East with the other half, plus a full
stopper in hearts. EW are known to have 26-27 hcp between them, so West should not give up
on game too soon. East may even jump to 5¨ with
a singleton of hearts!

4© = North has already
passed, which virtually outrules slam, so there is little point for South in telling the
opponents that he has a solid 8-card ©-suit
by opening 4§. As matter of fact, this will
lower the threshold for EW to enter the auction.
Pass = West is a little too weak for
a takeout double, the more so because East has already passed. If East hesitates, and West
then comes up with a takeout double, or if West passes after more than 12 seconds, and
East subsequently balances, NS should notify director, or (in Europe only), retain their
right to do so after the board has been played..

3D = Just forcing. East needs an extra ¨-stopper.
