§  - - -

Rather aggressive, but reasonable bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- 1¨ pass 1ª
pass 2§ pass 2¨
pass 4¨ pass 5¨
pass pass pass.

1ª = Upgrading on the certainty that there is an 8-card fit. North can only hold 3 diamonds if he has 4-4 in the majors. In any other case, there is a 4-4 fit or better in diamonds.
4¨ = North is not quite strong enough to jump to 5¨ by himself. South must bring a little extra as well. 3NT is out ouf reach, given the fact that South would have rebid 2NT or 3¨ with a balanced hand and 10-11 hcp.
5¨ = The §-void is most valuable in de proven 5-4 ¨-fit.

North has an easy play, even on a ¨-lead, won in hand: § ruffed, ©A, § ruffed, ©K, § ruffed, ª ruffed, ¨K, ¨Q, §Q for the king, and §T is good for the 11th trick.

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- --- 1§ 1ª
2¨ 2ª 2NT pass
3NT pass pass pass.

2¨ = 5+ suit, 8-11 hcp, the so-called negative free bid.
2NT = Asking for a maximum.
3NT = West has a good 6-card suit and 9 well working hcp.

Even the unlikely lead of §6 can't beat the contract. Declarer wins the second round of clubs, runs his diamonds, and leads towards ©K

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- --- --- 2©
pass pass pass.

2© = Precisely 5©, 4ª and 11-15 hcp (Flannery). Without Flannery, it will go: 1©-3§-3©, 3§ showing 4-card ©-support, most likely balanced hand, and 6 to a bad 9 hcp (Bergen raise).

Defense is entitled to 2 hearts, a diamond and a club.

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
pass 1¨ pass 1ª
pass 2ª pass 4ª
pass pass pass.

When the 5-4 fit has been disclosed, South has no excuse to risk his partner to pass out 3ª. It turns out that he has an easy play for 11 tricks.
