2§ = Stayman relay, ready to jump in hearts, when opener denies
4-card majors with 2¨. Such jump to 3© would show 5 spades, 4 spades, and 9+ hcp (Smolen
transfer).
If NS trail by a long way in a team game, this board could bring them back into the match,
for it makes 12 tricks when ªK is on side, and North is able to ruff either 1 diamond in
dummy or 2 clubs in hand (dummy reversal). In all other situations, North
should confine with 4ª.

2© = Ordinary reverse: 5+ diamonds, 4+ hearts, 16-19 hcp, 1RF.
2ª = 5+ ª-suit, 6-7 hcp. With one more hcp, West should jump to 3ª to show 6+ suit, 8+
hcp, and force game.

1© = Walsh Approach, bypassing 4-card ¨-suit with less than 12 hcp.
Needs alert.
2¨ = 5+ clubs, 4+ diamonds, 16-19 hcp. Ordinary reverse.
2ª = 4th Suit Forcing.
3§ = Extra length in clubs, unless East has no ª-stopper.
3¨ = Initiating slamtry in diamonds.
3© = 1st or 2nd round control of hearts.
4¨ = Waiting bid, denying controls in the blacks. This means that West has at least
2-card support in clubs.
4NT = Roman KeyCard Blackwood (1403-variation).
5© = 2 or 5 out of 5 aces, denying queen of diamonds.
The seemingly awkward pass-out of the score sheet originated after a
ruling of director on an irregularity:
One EW-pair played some Precision Club system. East, focused on the hughe
hand, opened 1§ out of turn. South chose not to accept this premature opening, so by Law 29B,
the call of 1§ was cancelled, and the auction reverted to West. This was not the end of
it. 1§ promised one of many types of hands containing zero or more clubs and 16+ hcp, and
was therefore conventional by definition. Law 29C
referred to Law
31, in order to find an answer to the question of how to deal with
conventional bids (other than conventional passes, doubles and redoubles)
out of rotation. Law 31B specifically
indicated what to do when offender bids at partner's turn to call: compelling
partner of offender to pass for the rest of the auction. With West compelled to pass, and
North, East and South passing voluntarily, the auction was over.
West's obligation to pass throughout clearly did not damage the non-offending side, so Law
23 did not apply. Since the auction did not
designate EW as defenders, the lead restrictions of Law
26B concerning withdrawn calls not related to specific
suits, did not apply either.
