North downgrades for his very flat hand, and does not raise to 2NT.

3ª (Jump overcall in suit of RHO) = Excellent 7- or 8-card minor, asking West to bid
3NT with ª-stopper.
Dbl = Demanding a ª-lead from North.
Pass = South's double gives West the
opportunity take make a fine distinction. The pass shows half a ª-stopper, while 4§
would deny any stopper and interest in 5 of a minor as well.

Dbl = Negative, showing
4-card ©-suit and 6+ hcp. South has some compensation for the one hcp he is short.
Rdb = Precisely 3-card ª-support,
6+ hcp. The non-forcing response of 2© would show 5+ hearts, about 10-15 hcp, but deny
any ª-fit.
2NT = Balanced hand, ª-stopper, 18-19 hcp.
3¨ = 5+ suit, 5-6 hcp, signoff. With more strength, we would cuebid 3ª, to make sure
that partner has a double stopper, or just 3NT, if we bring a stopper ourselves. The
cuebid will also help us when we want to explore slam.
