Dbl = Too strong for an intial overcall of 1©.
1NT = Balanced hand, no 4-card major, §-stopper, 8-10 hcp.
2© = 5+ suit, 16+ hcp. 1RF.

Recommended bidding sequence:

pass.

1ª = Vulnerable, we would rather not use Michaels cuebid to show 5+ spades and 5+ minor, but the void in East's suit does give us enough compensation to justify the simple overcall.
2ª = West is too strong for a single or preemptive double raise. He intends to bid 3ª next. The negative double and a sort of Truscott 2NT can also deal with situations like this.
4ª = Either preemptive or for business, puts the maximum pressure on EW.
5© = Rates West to have 2- or 3-card ©-support.
Pass = Leaves further action to North. Hopefully South has mind up his mind in East's mandatory pause of about 10 seconds. If East takes quick action instead, South should call director, for otherwise, he may have to pay the price for the unlawful quickness of RHO. The skip warning is not to prevent West from making an insufficient bid.
5ª = Should still have a fair chance opposite a minimum 1ª-overcall, for South must be very short in hearts.

Recommended bidding sequence:

pass pass.

1ª = 5+ suit, 6+ hcp.
Dbl = Promising precisely 3-card ª-support, but may still have a minimum opening hand.
3© = Competing for partscore. If North wants to invite to game, he uses the competitive redouble.
Pass = 3ª would still compete for partscore, but show better shape. The double would  be competitive and show the maximum single raise. We do not believe in straight penalty doubles in auctions like this. Perhaps East is 'trapping' with nice ©-holdings, hoping that partner will double again.
Dbl = Competitive, asking East to look at his hand from the bright side once again. The previous double showed the fit, this one the extra strength.
4ª = East has an average hand for his bid of 1ª, not a minimal one. If East was trapping after 3©, he can pass now.

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
2¨ pass pass 2ª
pass pass pass.

2¨ = Multi-colored, based on weak-2 in hearts. The ©-suit is too bad for a vulnerable 3©-opening.
Pass
= (Good) 6+ ¨-suit, bad fit for majors, no hope for game.
2ª = 5+ suit, 12-15 hcp.
Pass = Slightly short of inviting to 4ª, even in a team game. In the actual game, we did invite to game, and found company from Rufi Nurmohamed and Joseph Gielkens, who played in Dutch major league and first division for many years to date. This optimism cost our team a total of 14 imps, almost a third of the 47 imps we trailed by after 24 boards, and it could have been a lot worse, if the opponents would have found the penalty double.
