3§ = Forces game with 5 or more
clubs, and 12 or more hcp. The alternative of cuebidding 2ª has the disadvantge of not
being clear to partner.
3ª = Purely obstructive.
4¨ = Promising extra length and above-minimum strength.
4NT = RKCB for diamonds, of course.
5¨ = 0 or 3 out of 5 aces, 1403-variation.
6§ = East wants to protect his king of hearts, and offers 6§ as an alternative for 6¨.
Such offering of alternative contracts at the level of six must be discussed profoundly,
but here, it can hardly be misunderstood. If East is interested in grand slam, he can ask
for the queen of trumps and outside kings with 5©, or, for outside kings only with 5ª. If East would have started
with the forcing cuebid of 2ª, 6§ would be more likely to confuse partner. In that
case,West might expect 4 or 5 clubs at the most.
West's last pass = West is not questioning East's appropriate §-length (6+
suit), but from his point of view, East could be trying to protect the king of spades just
as well as the king of hearts, so he better passes.

1© = Walsh approach, once
again. South could bypass a 4+ ¨-suit, so North must alert.
