Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- pass 1© pass
2¨ pass 2NT pass
3NT pass pass pass.

2¨ = 4+ suit, 12+ hcp, forcing game.

South leads a spade for jack and ace. Norths returns one for the king. East ensures himself of 9 tricks by leading a hearts to the ace, and returns the ten for the king. NS must cash out in diamonds now, or East will make overtricks.

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- --- pass 4NT
pass 6¨ pass pass
pass.

4NT = 6/6+ in the minors, and less than 11 hcp.
6¨ = North has two things in mind: hoping that South has a play for the slam, and shutting out EW foregood.

EW can only struggle when East leads a spade, and West returns ¨Q for the ace. North draws the last trump, ruffs a club and a heart, and leads §K. West ducks in a desperate effort to scare North a little, but when the king holds, there is nothing left to get scared of.

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- --- --- pass
1§ 1¨ 3NT pass
pass pass.

South puts down a low spade, which runs via ten to jack. East wins the next spade, and runs §Q to the king. If North returns a heart or a club, he virtually surrenders, provided East will treat diamond right. Therefore, North parts with a low diamond for the nine. East runs ¨Q, and underleads §A. North takes the jack, and returns a club for the ace. East finesses with ¨J, and cashes §T, ¨A, ©A and ªA for a total of nine.

Recommended bidding sequence:

West North East South
1§ dbl 1© pass
1NT dbl pass 2¨
pass pass pass.

Dbl = Too strong to overcall 1©, for which the upper limit is about 15 hcp.
1© = 4+ suit, 6+ hcp.
Dbl = Still for takeout, and North doesn't need to have a 16+ hand either.
2¨ = 4+ suit and 0+ hcp, since South is forced to respond.

West expects partner to have something in hearts, so he leads the king to unblock. Dummy wins, and returns ¨Q for the king. East cashes §K and §Q, and then shifts to a diamond for the jack. West cashes §A and §T, and parts in spades, looking forward too two more defensive tricks, in trumps.
