Dbl = Negative,
in this case either 4-card ª-suit and 8+ hcp, or 4+ §-support
and 10-11 hcp, or just 12+ hcp. North is 1 hcp short for a negative double without 4-card ª-suit,
but has compensation in the §-fit and good 3-card ª-suit. The alternative of 3§ has the
disadvantage of putting South in a 4-3 fit once in a while. 2NT would show 10-11 hcp with
©-stopper.
3© = Preemptive raise. If East
wants to invite to game, he should take a support redouble, or cuebid 3§.
3ª = 4-card ª-suit, invitational. If South is stronger, he should take a sort of responsive double.
4§ = 4+ §-suit, nó 4-card ª-suit, and 10-11 hcp.
South will not be able to get get of his ¨-loser, since het can't force EW to give him a
ruff and sluff.

2¨ = Multi-colored, based on
weak-2 in spades.
3ª = Preemptive raise with good ª-support, but even longer or
better hearts. West must pass or convert to 4©.
Dbl = For takeout. The situation is similar to 3ª-pass-pass, so if North has good shape
and ©-suit, he may have as little as 14 hcp.
4¨ = 5+ ¨-suit and 17+ hcp. South could have overcalled 4¨ with 5+ suit and 14-16 hcp.
We do not play Leaping
Michaels* over 3© and 3ª.
¨K is on side, so North makes his game.
* Leaping Michaels shows 5+
in the minor bid, and 5+ in the unbid major. The Dutch call it World
Convention, even though it does not show the
World's Fair (about 14-16 hcp).

2§ = One of many types of strong hands.
2¨ = Semi-automatic relay. A positive response of 2©, 2ª, 3§, or
3¨ requires KQxxx or AJTxx or better in the suit, and, 8+ hcp.
2NT = Balanced hand, 22-23 hcp.
Many Wests lead a low spade to nine and jack. South plays 3 rounds of diamonds, and puts
East in with the 4th. East returns ©K to the ace. South cashes his aces of spades, and
parts in hearts. East takes 3 tricks in hearts, and puts South to a guess with a low
club. South must rise for his 8th trick. A ©- or ¨-lead sets the contract, for example:
¨9 to the queen, §K, ¨A, ¨K, ¨ for the ten, ©K for the ace, ª for the nine, ª for
the ace, © for the nine, ©Q, HJ, and on a low clubs, South his to guess right for down
one.

2© = Fourth suit forcing, for
which it is is not forbidden to have real hearts.
3§ = 5-card §-suit, 11-13 hcp.
4© = Asking West to pass or to correct to 4ª. 3©, repeating the 4th suit forcing, would
be ambiguous. It it also used when East is seeking a half ©-stopper for 3NT.
South leads a spade for jack and ace. One line to 10 tricks is: ¨ to jack and king,
©-return to king, © to jack, 2 ª-discards on ¨A and ¨Q, ¨-ruffed in hand (¨ break
4-3, a 62% proposition), 2 rounds of trumps, §A, CK, and ¨4.
