Dbl = Too strong to
overcall 2§, and unaware of pushing North into
game.
If North opens 1©, South will be able to raise
to 2©, and NS reach game without help of the
opponents. In the sixties, it was still common practise to open with the lower ranking
5-card suit, if it was this much better than the higher one. Such treatment makes it very
hard to find a 5-3 fit in spades, and has therefore been abandoned in the past thirty
years.
Even a trump lead will not keep North from ruffing a spade in dummy. In order to cope with
ªAKxx in West, North should lead two spades
towards his queen, so his line will look like this: win East's ©-lead in dummy, ª for
the ace, © for the jack, ¨ to the king, and spade for the king.

1NT = One round force in our
system. North has less than 3©, less than 4ª, and 5-11 hcp.
4© = The only proper action. 3© shows 6+ hearts and 16-17 hcp, 3NT shows 6+ hearts
and 18-19 hcp, and 2ª is passing unnecessary
info to the enemy.
EW are entitled to ªA and ©Q only..

2NT = Balanced hand, 20-21 hcp.
3§ = Puppet
Stayman, exploring 4- and 5-card majors at the same time.
3ª = 5-card
suit.
The black queens behave nicely, so even on a ¨-lead,
West has an easy play for 12 tricks. He should not forget to ruff a ¨ in dummy, though.
* As of September 1, Puppet Stayman
is no longer alertable in The Netherlands. You will find Dutch Alert Regulations as PDF
document here.
