'Normal' bidding sequence:

West North East South
--- --- 2¨ dbl
3© pass pass dbl
pass 4ª pass 5§
pass pass pass.

2¨ = Multi-colored.
Dbl = Too strong for an initial overcall of 3§.
3© = 3+ support for both majors, attempt to shut NS out forever.
Pass = North is about a queen short of a responsive double.
Dbl = For takeout again, so South must have a 16+ hand. 4§ now would give up on 3NT.
4ª = Hoping that South's takeout double includes a 4+ ª-suit.
5§ = Misfit in spades, and far longer clubs than diamonds. With virtually equal length in the minors, South would bid 4NT instead.

The obvious ¨-lead beats the contract. 3NT is frigid, but it takes a new defensive treatment of jump overcalls at the 3-level to get there:

West North East South
--- --- 2¨ 3©
dbl 3NT pass pass
pass.

3©, a jump cue in one of the majors East can hold for his presumed weak-2, shows a solid 7+ minor, and asks for a ©-stopper.

With this usage of 3© and 3ª, South has to look for something else to show a hand with 6+ major and 14-15 hcp. He will either have to overcall 2© or 2ª, or, double first, and bid his 6+ major at his next turn. We don't really consider this a loss. We are not that happy with the so-called good intermediate jump overcalls at the 3-level, anyway. They tend to put much more pressure on partner than is necessary.

This new treatment may lead to an excellent slam, when North holds *KQxx instead of ©KQx.

More discussion to follow.
