The opening of 3NT replaces the natural opening preempts of 4§ and 4¨ in our system.
When South opens 3NT on the hand above, North has to guess whether he has a solid 7-card
suit (but nó outside strength), or just an 8-card suit with 2 top honors. Because the
second case is more likely to occur, North will bid 4§ in order to investigate 4ª,
before confining with 5¨. That way, NS will miss 3NT, the only game that makes against
any defense. Feeling the need of refinement, we recommend to open 1¨ when having AKQJxxx,
and pass, or open 3¨ with AKQxxxx, depending on vulnerability.
