1ª = In Walsh Approach, South frequently
bypasses 4+ ¨-suits, so North must alert.
Pass = East has little to offer in spades
and diamonds, and is not that strong, so he takes it easy.
More discussion to follow.

1NT = This particular Unsual 1NT can be made on 4-4 in the minors. East does not
want 2© for a response.
Dbl = Negative. A penalty double is less
useful here, since EW are most unlikely to stay in 1NT. East does not want to invite on
3-card support yet, and East's last call gives him lots of reasons to search for the 4-4
fit in hearts.
3§ = Preemptive.
Pass = Not strong enough to bid 3© now.
4§ = Asking North to bid a major. South passed at his first turn to call, so he can
hardly have interest in slam. 3© is also forcing, but shows a 5+ suit. If South has 5+
hearts and 8-11 hcp (or 6-10, as an alternative range used by some Dutch experts), he will
bid 2© over the Unusual 1NT, just as if East has bid 2§ or 2¨ instead. If South has
only 4 hearts, and still wants to invite to game over 3§, he may double again.
More discussion to follow.

2NT = Balanced hand, 20-21 hcp. Trade ªK for ©Q, and West has a perfect upgrade to
2§-2¨-2NT.
3© = 5+ ©, 0+ hcp, the well known Jacóby Transfer.

2¨ = Multi-colored, based on semiforcing in clubs.
Pass = Requires some discipline, but 2ª
promises 5+ suit and 12-15 hcp. The vaste majority of experts
objects to preempt over openings, that turn out to be preemptive themselves in at least
90% of the time.
2© = Signoff to weak-2 in hearts, possibly invitational to weak-2 in spades.
3§ = Semiforcing in clubs, i.e., 5+ suit and 20-22 hcp, or 8-9 playing tricks to make up
for the lack of hcp strength. East may pass now with less than 4-5 hcp, but he will rather
not pass with an ace.
3© = 4+ suit, forcing game.
3NT = Precisely 6§322, for with 5§332, he would open 2NT.
More discussion to follow.
