1 = We open any other 5431-hand with 11 hcp, so why passing this one?
2 = Strong type of takeout double, 16+ hand.
3 = Walsh approach is canceled after interference.
4 = Renewing the takeout double, showing 18+ hand.
5 = North must bid a suit.
6 = Inviting to bid game, unless North has a complete yarborough.
7 = Unwise to double partscores for penalties, unless one has bright prospects of setting
the contract by 2 or more tricks.
More discussion to follow.

1 = Checkback Stayman or New Minor Forcing,
hoping to find South with 3-card ©-support.
2 = 3-card ©-suit.
3 = Agrees with © as trump suit, showing §-control, not necessarily singleton or void.
4 = Last Train (to Clarksville [Indiana?]), showing ª-, but denying §-control.
The underlying idea is as follows:
a. South could not continue the slamtry without a ª-control, the control North just denied;
b. If South has ª-
and ¨-control, he could just as well start
asking with RKCB.
5 = If South can't bring a ¨-control, slam is
off, as far as Noth is concerned.
More discussion to follow.

1 = Garozzo splinters usually require 4-card support, but you
can't always have what you want. One advantage of 2NT is, that it shuts West out of the
bidding.
2 = 3© could work out well at matchpoints, but
is far too risky at imps, when NS, at least, are heading for game.
3 = Asking for the short suit of South.
4 = Limit raise type of hand: singleton or void in hearts, but only 8-11 hcp.
5 = South's singleton suits North very well for game, but slam is looks out of reach.
North is unaware of the §-fit. Give South ¨K instead of ¨QJ,
and 6§ becomes more than a Las Vegas gamble.
More discussion to follow.

1 = At imps, it is rarely wise to interfere with a 2NT opening.
2 = Puppet Stayman, asking for 4- or 5 card major.
3 = One or two 4-card majors.
4 = Sort of transfer: 4-card ª-suit, no
4-card ©-suit.
5 = No 4-card ª-suit.
South leads ¨J, third best. East has no valid
clue to play him for ©Q8, unless South
interferes or hesitates after 2NT.

1 = Only the stiff king keeps him from rebidding 3§.
2 = Fourth suit forcing.
3 = 6/4-shaped hand with 15-19 hcp.
4 = Showing 5/5 in the majors, for otherwise, there is no point in repeating 4th suit.
5 = ª-preference, more than likely based on a
doubleton.
When one is missing one of the five aces and the queen of trumps, slam is usually against
the odds. The 6¨ of Jansma and Verhees is a
typical case of support for this theorem. Jansma should have bid 4¨ instead of 5¨, giving
Verhees the room for investigating. Verhees should have gone for the 'sure' thing, and
have passed 5¨.

1 = Unlike 2 over 1 of a major, 2§ over 1¨ just shows 10+ hcp, forcing for one
round.
2 = If 3§ would force game, this slam would
probably be missed.
3 = ©-control.
4 = ¨-control, denying ª-control.
5 = RKCB, 1403-variation, if applicable.
6 = 0 or 3 out of 5 aces.
7 = NS have crossed the point of no return, but before South started asking for aces, he
already knew that his side had enough trumps to make up for the case North did not have §Q.
Slam must be played from South, so 6¨ is out of
the question. The queen of diamonds is an important card, but we have a 5-4 fit in ¨, which subtiantially increases the chance it will
come down, in case North does not have it.
