South splinters, but North is too weak to cuebid or even to bid 3ª, which would still leave room to explore slam. His jump to game
is known as the principle of fast arrival.

West opens 2¨ intending to show a
semiforcing hand with ¨, i.e. a 5+
suit and 20-22 hcp, or a little less with 8 playing tricks. Easts jump to 4© shows excellent support for both majors, and can
be both preemptive and constructive. He just denies slam interest. After this unexpected
response, West has little left than bidding 5¨.
More analysis later.

Westra strongly recommends* natural 2NT-overcalls, Stayman and Jacoby transfers against
natural weak-2 openings, so why not against Muiderbergers? If you don't treat it that way,
West will get stuck after a 3©-response, or go
for a number in 3NT on a §-lead.

We recommend opening 4§ and 4¨ with solid 8-card majors. 3NT replaces natural 4§- and 4¨-openers.
